Behavioral Endocrinology: Lighting up Peptidergic Neurons that Mediate a Complex Behavior
نویسنده
چکیده
A recent study in which a calcium-sensitive fluorescent protein was expressed in transgenic Drosophila has shown that a command neuropeptide that turns on a complex behavioral sequence elicits a spatially and temporally complex pattern of neuropeptide signals.

Inhibitory peptidergic modulation of C. elegans serotonin neurons is gated by T-type calcium channels
Serotonin is an evolutionarily ancient molecule that functions in generating and modulating many behavioral states. Although much is known about how serotonin acts on its cellular targets, how serotonin release is regulated in vivo remains poorly understood. In the nematode C. elegans, serotonin neurons that drive female reproductive behavior are directly modulated by inhibitory neuropeptides. ...
متن کاملA Command Chemical Triggers an Innate Behavior by Sequential Activation of Multiple Peptidergic Ensembles
BACKGROUND At the end of each molt, insects shed their old cuticle by performing the ecdysis sequence, an innate behavior consisting of three steps: pre-ecdysis, ecdysis, and postecdysis. Blood-borne ecdysis-triggering hormone (ETH) activates the behavioral sequence through direct actions on the central nervous system. RESULTS To elucidate neural substrates underlying the ecdysis sequence, we...
متن کاملElectrophysiological, pharmacological and behavioral studies of different physiological roles of the nucleus paragigantocellularis
The nucleus paragigantocellularis (PGI) is located in the rostral ventrolateral medulla and has noticeable connections with some other brain nuclei, such as locus ceruleus, nucleus raphe magnus and periaqueductal gray. In rats it is 3 mm in rostrocaudal and 1 mm in mediolateral and 1 mm in the dorsolateral aspect. Anatomically and functionally, PGI has been divided into two subnuclei, retrofaci...
متن کاملAge- and Wavelength-Dependency of Drosophila Larval Phototaxis and Behavioral Responses to Natural Lighting Conditions
Animals use various environmental cues as key determinant for their behavioral decisions. Visual systems are hereby responsible to translate light-dependent stimuli into neuronal encoded information. Even though the larval eyes of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster are comparably simple, they comprise two types of photoreceptor neurons (PRs), defined by different Rhodopsin genes expressed. R...
متن کاملMinireview: Diversity and complexity of signaling through peptidergic G protein-coupled receptors.
The transmission of signals by G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that use peptides as ligands is critical for function of the gastrointestinal system. Molecular cloning has indicated that GPCRs constitute the most diverse transmembrane receptor family with many of these genes expressed in the gastrointestinal system. In addition to this molecular diversity, it has become clear that signaling ...
